To the Shareholders of Main Street Market,
Main Street Market is a grocery and butcher shop on Main Street in Aurora, Minnesota. It is owned by its shareholders and run as a cooperative.
A cooperative is a business owned by the people who use it. Here, that means residents of Aurora and the surrounding area who have bought shares in the store. As a shareholder, you hold a share in the business and a vote in how it is governed.
The board of directors governs the cooperative on behalf of the shareholders. The board sets the overall direction of the business, oversees its finances, approves the annual budget, and holds the store accountable to the standards the shareholders expect. I serve as chair of the board.
Day-to-day operations are assigned to the general manager. The general manager is responsible for running the store: keeping the shelves stocked and the butcher case full, managing staff, setting hours, handling pricing, and the many practical decisions a grocery store requires. The general manager reports to the board.
Our focus for the year ahead is a store that runs well and stays on sound financial footing. That means dependable hours, fair prices, and quality meat cut in house, delivered by a business that is managed carefully and lives within its means. A grocery store in a town this size lasts only when it is run with discipline, and that is the standard the board has set.
We answer to the shareholders. The board's decisions are made in your interest, and we will keep you informed as the cooperative gets established and grows.
Thank you for your support as we get the store running under its new ownership.
Sincerely,
Norma Jean Jofs
